Working Skirt?

Back in March some friends and I took part in a writing contest. We were to write a fictional piece about work. Sadly, none of us were selected as finalists. I wasn't surprised that I didn't make the cut, as I didn't actually finish my piece. Road to hell. Good intentions. Yada Yada.

We went to hear the six finalists read their pieces a few weeks ago. There were four prose pieces and two poetry. I've come to the conclusion that I'm never going understand poetry. I wasn't even sure that the poems were about work. I've also concluded that fictionalization of job dissatisfaction is the way to go when writing about work.

For this bohemian event, I took a chance and wore my 20-year-old, gypsy-like skirt. The skirt remains in my closet because it is an integral component of my Baba Babushka costume. Choosing my real-life wardrobe from the Tickle Trunk may not have been the wisest idea.

The elastic in the waistband had lost it's stretch, and the 20-year-old drawstring didn't have the staying power it once did. Also, I had forgotten how much this skirt needs a slip until I saw my refection in a shop window. Oops. Still, I like how the skirt looks with the boots and the denim jacket. And, as I was seated at the event, I spent minimal time hoiking up my skirt. With a little care and attention I managed to stay decently covered (except for the lack of a slip) all evening.

I'm linking up with Patti of Not Dead Yet Style for Visible Monday. There you'll find inspiration to tickle any imagination.

  1. LOL at your skirt story - I have had similar, where staying seated was the better part of discretion : > You do look fab, and thanks for sharing with Vis Monday!

    1. Thanks Patti. I really should have taken the skirt for a test run before I rushed out the door. I intentionally left dressing until the last minute, as I didn't want give myself enough time to talk myself out of wearing the skirt. Oops!

  2. Hello Laurie,
that's why I often wear a belt with my skirts - particularly with the self-made :-)
You look great in your bohemian skirt with the denim jacket.

    1. Thanks Sabine. I do like that skirt. I'm glad I kept it through years of closet clean-outs. The belt didn't do much good in this case. I'll either have to add belt loops, or replace the elastic and the drawstring if I'm going to wear it regularly.

  3. Even though you may have had some minor issues with the skirt...you sure put together a great outfit with it. Every piece is perfect.
Just this morning I stood in front of the window in a skirt, with legs spread, asking "Honey, can you see through this skirt?" Yep, sure enough...I had to find that darn slip in order to feel decent at the office.

  4. Thanks Lisa! I really would have felt better with a slip, though I recently had the elastic give way on a slip I was wearing. It fell out from under my skirt as I walked across the room at work! Hope you had better luck with yours.

    1. Wow, did you toss that slip in the trash or try to fix it? I will have to check the elastic in my slips now. lol.

    2. I tossed it. I considered fixing it, but I'm not good at getting to the things in my "sewing pile". It's actually more of a leave-it-it-sitting-around-until-I-can't-stand-looking-at-it-any-more-then-throw-it-out pile

  5. Back in fashion, not costumey at all! Personally, I like it when a long skirt shows a bit of leg silhouette in sunlight. However, when you can see the color of your panties, the a slip might be called for! So cute with your jacket and adorable booties. Good call.
Have a fabulous week... keep writing!

    1. LOL! Thanks Jan! I guess the other option to avoid the visible panty issue would be to avoid panties...nope, not going there!

  7. Nah, not me. It was at the end of the season finale ... and for the life of me I have NO idea how missed it the first time around. I watched it! All the way through ...! I thought.
It's John Hurt. Yes, the Academy Award winning John Hurt. The one who was in the remake of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
I Googled it to make sure, and there it was.
Dunno how I feel about that.
At least we know he can act.
